A GREAT ROUTE TO RIDE...THE BEST OF CAMBRIDGESHIRE
Why it’s great This local rideout and incorporates the best of our home county. Starting at Buckden, it’s half an hour from RiDE’s Peterborough office and it takes in the still water of Grafham Water, the iconic swerves and sweeps of the B660 and one of Britain’s smallest cities.
The B660 is always a joy, undulating and flowing, and from there it’s a game of two halves – you’ve got the chocolate-box beauty of places like Abbots Ripton and then the bumpy Fenland switchbacks from Somersham all the way to the rather charmingly named Tipps End. The destination of Ely is worth it, though: classy, pretty and with an utterly spectacular cathedral.
When to go Right now is the best time: verdant hedgerows, big skies, golden light and long shadows on a summer evening.
Where to visit Ely Cathedral is wonderful, but you could always time it to take in a trackday at Bedford Autodrome, too.
Take a pic at The sign entering Tipps End is always a classic, but Ely waterfront is lovely as well (it’s posh enough to have hosted The Boat Race a couple of times, too).
Stop for a cuppa at I always grab some fish and chips at The Fish House in Ely city centre. Decent servings and always some outside seating free, too.
