The Black Mountain road in South Wales has brilliant corners, huge views and (mostly) a decent surface — usually with little traffic — though there are often sheep grazing beside the road. It’s not the only great road in the area though. The Brecon Beacons is crammed with outstanding riding. Most great roads are a reasonable length, crossing the mountains and linking the rural hinterland with the bustling valleys further south.

But as good as the other roads are, a sunny day on the Black Mountain is hard to beat.

HOW TO GET THERE

From the north, take the A40 or A483 to Llandovery. From the south, take the A465 Heads of the Valleys road to Glynneath, then the A4109/A4221 to Abercraf and the A4067 to Brynamman.

WHEN TO GO

Avoid winter. July to September usually tends to give the best weather. WHERE TO STAY To explore the region, Brecon or Llandovery — Brecon is larger. We like The Wellington in Brecon itself.

WHERE TO RIDE

Try the loop from Brecon to Beulah to Llandovery to Trecastle to Brynamman to Penderyn and back to Brecon.
