RiDE Guide to Spain and Portugal
This page contains all the electronic material to support the RiDE Guide to Spain and Portugal, published with the September 2018 issue of RiDE (if you don’t have a copy, please see the “Magazine issues” tab to order one).
To preview a route, click on the title – this will open a Google Maps preview of the route. Please note that the previews of some mountain routes may be automatically altered in winter, if Google is aware that the road is closed by snow. At other times, the previews may detour around temporary road closures.
To download a file, simply click the “Download GPX file” link. Please note that files are zipped for transfer and may need to be unpacked with a utility like WinZip or Stuffit Xpander before they can be used. GPX files can be loaded directly into TomTom Rider 400/500 series navs, or imported into Garmin’s free BaseCamp software for use with Garmin or BMW sat navs. If you have trouble downloading a route, please email the office at ride@ride.co.uk to request a route. Please note that we cannot send out EVERY route here – but we can send out ones needed for specific trips. But please allow a few days: don’t email on the Friday afternoon when your ferry is booked for the Sunday.
If you wish to edit a route (for instance, to go to a different hotel to the one suggested), this can be done in BaseCamp (Garmin/BMW) or by uploading it to www.myrouteapp.com (TomTom). The MyRouteApp site can also convert from GPX to ITN format (older TomToms) and to other formats such as KML, if you wish to try using the route in a phone app – but please note, we do not recommend this. The size and complexity of some of the routes means we have confidence only in dedicated sat navs to guide you accurately on the intended routes. We recommend using BaseCamp in the “motoring” (car icon) mode rather than the “motorcycling” (bike icon) mode. Set any sat nav to avoid unpaved roads, but not to avoid seasonally closed roads.
We quote a “riding time” estimate for all routes: please note that these exclude time spent on stops for fuel, lunch, coffee, calls of nature, taking photos, getting lost… It is purely an estimate of how much time will be spent in the saddle if you rode without pause from one end of the route to the other. In practice it’s best to allow another 1.5-2 hours over the quoted time for each day’s ride, for food and fuel stops: but note that long lunches will extend the day further… However, conditions in Spain and Portugal are frequently hot (that’s part of the appeal) so it is important to make regular stops to take on fluids – not just coffee: water is vital to avoid dehydration.
Finally, these routes are our best recommendations but shouldn’t be a straight-jacket. If you want to detour, do so. If you want to shorten, extend or otherwise alter one of our routes, please do so: it’s important for you to enjoy your ride, so adapt our routes to suit you. Please note that with the exception of the Bardenas Reales route, there are no unpaved roads at any point on any of our routes: if your sat nav leads you to an unpaved road, it’s having a moment… somewhere, you’ll have missed a turn and it will have recalculated to take you where the route was never intended to go. Check the settings (should be avoiding unpaved roads), turn around and get it to try again… but don’t get stressed. It’s exploring, not getting lost – and there’s no finer place to explore than Spain and Portugal.
Enjoy your rides in Spain and Portugal.
